2026 Holidays Now On Sale

Lesvos is not the kind of island that rushes to impress you. It doesn’t rely on postcard clichés or headline attractions. Instead, it rewards those who take the time to explore—offering a mix of quiet beaches, lively harbour towns and landscapes that shift from pine forests to volcanic rock. It’s the third-largest island in Greece but it remains one of the least commercialised, making it an ideal escape for travellers who want authenticity without crowds. Before you visit, here’s what you need to know.

An Island of contrasts: From olive groves to volcanic plains

Lesvos in Greece is divided into two very different landscapes. The eastern side is green and fertile, with rolling olive groves, wooded valleys and traditional villages. This is where you’ll find Mytilini, the island’s capital, with its neoclassical mansions, fortress and lively harbour. Head west and the scenery changes dramatically. The volcanic origins of the island are clear in the barren, almost lunar-like landscapes near Sigri. This region is home to the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a UNESCO-listed site where fossilised trees date back 20 million years. In between, you’ll find small fishing villages, sandy beaches and plenty of space to explore without the crowds found on other Greek islands.

Where to Stay: Historic villages and beachfront retreats

Lesvos Island, Greece has no large-scale resorts, which means accommodation options are smaller, family-run and often packed with character.

  • Molyvos (also known as Mithymna) – The most picturesque village on the island, with a Byzantine castle overlooking the sea. The stone-built houses, winding alleys and lively waterfront make it a popular base for visitors.
  • Petra – A short drive from Molyvos, Petra has a long sandy beach and a more relaxed atmosphere. Its landmark is the Church of Panagia Glykofilousa, perched on a rock in the centre of the village.
  • Skala Eressos – The birthplace of the poet Sappho, this village has a different feel from the rest of the island. The beach is one of the best on Lesvos and the waterfront is lined with cafés, bars and boutique hotels.
  • Sigri – A quiet, remote village in the west, ideal for those who want to escape entirely. The beaches here are unspoiled and the Petrified Forest is nearby.

Food and drink: More than just Ouzo

Lesvos Island in Greece is known as the home of ouzo, Greece’s famous anise-flavoured spirit. The island produces some of the best in the country and visiting a traditional ouzo distillery is a must. But there’s more to the local food scene than just the drinks.

  • Fresh seafood – Fishing is central to life on Lesvos and you’ll find excellent seafood everywhere. Try sardeles pastes (salted sardines) in Mytilini or grilled octopus in Skala Sikamnias.
  • Ladotyri cheese – A unique local cheese aged in olive oil, giving it a distinctive flavour. Best enjoyed with a glass of ouzo.
  • Kalloni bay sardines – Small, delicate and best eaten fresh, these sardines are a local delicacy.
  • Amygdalota – A traditional almond-based sweet, often served with coffee.

Many of the best tavernas are family-run, with menus that change daily depending on what’s available.

Beaches: Hidden coves and long stretches of sand

Greece is for couples, families and those looking for quiet, unspoiled coastlines. Lesvos has some of the most varied beaches in the Greek islands, from long sandy stretches to tiny pebble coves.

  • Eftalou Beach – Just outside Molyvos, this pebbly beach is known for its hot springs, where warm water seeps into the sea.
  • Anaxos Beach –  A sandy, family and couple-friendly beach with shallow waters and plenty of beachside tavernas.
  • Skala Eressos Beach – One of the best in Greece. A long, wide bay with soft sand and clear water, perfect for swimming.
  • Vatera Beach – At 8km long, this is one of the longest beaches in the Aegean. Despite its size, it remains peaceful even in summer.

Because the island is so large, it’s worth hiring a car to explore different beaches during your stay.

History and Culture: An Island with stories to tell

Lesvos has a history that stretches back thousands of years. It was the birthplace of Sappho, one of the most famous poets of ancient Greece and Theophilos, a celebrated folk painter. There are ancient sites, Ottoman-era mansions and Byzantine churches scattered across the island.

  • Mytilini Castle – One of the largest castles in Greece, with views across the Aegean.
  • Roman Aqueduct of Moria – A well-preserved aqueduct dating back to the 2nd century AD.
  • Sigri Castle – Built by the Ottomans in the 18th century to protect the western coast.

For a small island, Lesvos has an impressive number of museums, including an Archaeological Museum, a Byzantine Museum and a Folklore Museum showcasing local traditions.

Getting there: Flights and ferries

Lesvos is well connected, with flights from the UK to Mytilini International Airport (MJT) via Athens. The island is also accessible by ferry from Piraeus (Athens' main port), though the journey takes around 10 hours. For those interested in island hopping, Lesvos is part of the North Aegean route, with connections to Chios, Samos and Limnos.
